Standardized extracts are especially useful when evaluating bergamot because they provide a defined amount of active plant compounds. The dose, extract strength, and formulation can all shape the results seen in clinical research.

A 2026 double-blind trial gives a more conservative idea of what to expect. In the study, 108 adults with high LDL took 375 mg of a standardized bergamot extract each day. After four months, LDL fell by 7% and total cholesterol fell by 7.3%.

This is lower than some of the dramatic reductions reported in older studies. One reason is that bergamot supplements are not all the same. Different extracts can contain different amounts of the plant compounds thought to be responsible for the effect.

When comparing bergamot supplements, look at how the extract is standardized, not just the total number of milligrams on the label. 

How may bergamot affect cholesterol?


Bergamot contains natural plant compounds called flavonoids and polyphenols. Researchers are studying how these compounds may influence the way the body makes, processes, and clears fats such as cholesterol.

In a cell and human study, bergamot improved several cholesterol-related markers, including LDL and triglycerides, after 12 weeks. Laboratory findings from the same research also suggested that bergamot may affect some of the processes involved in cholesterol production.

The exact effect depends on the extract, which is another reason standardized bergamot products are easier to compare with clinical research. 

Bergamot vs. statins: where each fits

Bergamot may produce a modest drop in LDL, but it is not as powerful or as well studied as prescription statins. Moderate-strength statins typically lower LDL by about 30% to 49%, while stronger statins can lower it by 50% or more. Statins have also been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

If your LDL is very high, you already have heart disease, or your doctor has recommended a statin, medication is usually the main treatment to follow.

Is bergamot safe if your triglycerides are already low?

If your triglycerides are already in a healthy range, that does not automatically mean bergamot is unsuitable. The main concern is an unexpectedly very low triglyceride level, which can sometimes be linked to other health or nutrition issues.

If your goal is to lower LDL, check your cholesterol before starting and again after using the supplement consistently. That lets you see how both LDL and triglycerides are changing.

2. Information about the active plant compounds

Bergamot's flavonoids and polyphenols are natural plant compounds thought to contribute to its cholesterol effects. Recent clinical studies reported both the total extract dose and the amount of these compounds. A label that only says “bergamot 500 mg” gives you less information.

3. Batch documentation.
